Overview
Flik is an inventive ant who doesn't fit in with his colony because his gadgets keep causing trouble. When he accidentally knocks the winter food offering into the water, the grasshoppers demand double. Flik offers to leave the island to recruit fighter bugs to protect them. He doesn't realize the bugs he hires are actually fired circus performers. They're not fighters at all, but they're forced to pretend when the grasshoppers return. The colony works together to build a fake bird to scare off the predators, but their plan is threatened when the truth about the circus bugs comes out near the end.
Takeaways
The ants spend their lives working to feed the grasshoppers, who demand food without offering anything in return. Flik's ideas are rejected because the colony is afraid of change, but his persistence eventually shows the other ants that they can stand up for themselves. When the ants realize how much stronger they are than the grasshoppers, they work together to drive them away. By organizing their efforts, the ants save their harvest and protect their home, proving that cooperation can overcome greed.
