How to Train Your Dragon

  • Director: Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois

Overview

Hiccup is a weak Viking teenager who wants to prove himself by killing dragons, which frequently raid his village. He injures a rare Night Fury dragon but can't bring himself to kill it, naming it Toothless instead. Hiccup studies Toothless and learns that dragons are not the monsters they seem, using this knowledge to excel in dragon-fighting class. He must convince his village to stop fighting and work together to defeat a giant dragon that controls the others.

Takeaways

The war between Vikings and dragons is fueled by fear and fighting. Hiccup's friendship with Toothless changes everything, showing that the dragons only steal food because a giant monster forces them to. Hiccup makes a new saddle and tail fin to help Toothless fly again, working together with him as a team. The old way of training Vikings to hate and fight dragons is useless compared to understanding them. By showing his village how to cooperate with dragons, Hiccup transforms their entire way of life.
