Glass Onion

  • Director: Rian Johnson
  • Year: 2022

Overview

Tech billionaire Miles Bron invites his eclectic group of friends to his private Greek island for a murder mystery game. The guests, who call themselves the Disruptors, all rely on Miles for their financial and social status. When a real murder occurs, world-famous detective Benoit Blanc arrives to investigate. Blanc doesn't buy the group's carefully crafted public images. As Blanc peels back the layers of Miles's business dealings, he uncovers a web of blackmail, greed, and intellectual theft. The detective must expose the killer before Miles can destroy the evidence and silence the remaining witnesses to protect his empire.

Takeaways

Miles's empire runs on a bunch of yes-men who tolerate his foolishness just to keep getting his money. He isn't actually a genius; he is just a smooth-talking thief who steals other people's ideas and claims them as his own. The Glass Onion itself is a perfect metaphor for Milesβ€”it looks fancy and complicated from the outside, but it's totally shallow once you look closely. His friends are stuck defending a fraud because they can't afford to lose his financial backing. Once Helen burns down his house and ruins his reputation, the group finally turns on him because he isn't useful to them anymore.
