Overview

Don Vito Corleone is the head of a powerful New York mafia family. When he refuses to enter the emerging drug trade, a rival family attempts to assassinate him, triggering a violent gang war. His youngest son, Michael, a decorated war hero who wanted to remain uninvolved in the family business, is forced to step in to protect his father. Michael kills a corrupt police captain and a rival mobster, fleeing to Sicily. When his brother Sonny is murdered, Michael returns to take control of the family, executing a ruthless purge of his enemies and consolidating his power as the new Don.

Takeaways

The Corleone family runs like its own government, offering protection and settling scores for people who don't trust the regular authorities. Vito refuses to get into the drug trade because he knows he will lose the respect and political influence he has built up over the years. Michael never wanted to be part of this life, but he is forced to step in when his family is threatened with extinction. Unlike his father, who ruled with personal relationships and favors, Michael runs the family like a cold, heartless business. His final purge wipes out all his rivals at once, securing his power but destroying his soul in the process.
