Overview

Django is an enslaved man who is freed by a German bounty hunter, Dr. King Schultz, who needs his help to identify some targets. They form a partnership, and Schultz teaches Django how to shoot and hunt bounties. Django wants to find and rescue his wife, Broomhilda, who was sold to a cruel plantation owner, Calvin Candie. They travel to Candie's plantation, Candyland, pretending to be buyers to secure her freedom.

Takeaways

The pre-Civil War South is a brutal society built on slavery and racism. Schultz and Django work within the law by hunting bounties, using the rules to outsmart the system. When they try to rescue Broomhilda, they have to put on a big act and play their cards close to their chest so Calvin Candie doesn't catch on. Candyland is a plantation where Candie rules like a tyrant. In the end, the whole plan falls apart and explodes into violence, proving you can't reason with evil people and sometimes you just have to tear their house down.
