Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  • Director: Tim Burton
  • Year: 2005

Overview

Willy Wonka is an eccentric candy maker who has closed his factory to the public for years due to industrial espionage. He announces a contest where five golden tickets are hidden in chocolate bars, offering a tour of the factory. Charlie Bucket, a poor boy living with his family, finds the last ticket. During the tour, the other four children succumb to their greed and bad habits, getting removed from the tour one by one. Charlie is the last child standing, and Wonka offers him the factory as a prize. They don't expect his choice.

Takeaways

Wonka's factory is a magical, secret world, but keeping it isolated from the public has made Wonka pretty lonely and out of touch. The golden ticket contest is his way of finding an honest kid to inherit his candy empire, but he doesn't expect the other children to be so completely ruined by their bad habits. Each kid's bad behavior gets them kicked out in a funny but deserved way, leaving only Charlie. Wonka thinks Charlie will dump his family to get the factory, but Charlie refuses the offer because he cares more about his relatives than money. This makes Wonka realize that a successful business isn't worth anything if you don't have family to share it with.
