Overview
Paula is a young woman who marries Gregory and moves into the London home of her deceased aunt. Gregory begins to systematically manipulate her environment to make her believe she is losing her mind. He hides objects, creates strange noises in the attic, and dims the gaslights, then denies these events are happening. His goal is to institutionalize her so he can search the house undisturbed for her aunt's hidden jewels. A police inspector named Brian becomes suspicious of Gregory's behavior and intervenes, helping Paula realize the manipulation and reclaim her sanity before Gregory gets arrested.
Takeaways
Gregory uses cruel manipulation to control exactly what Paula sees and hears, making her doubt her own reality. By secretly changing things in the house and then lying about it, he slowly drives her to believe she is going crazy. This leaves her completely reliant on his word since she is isolated from friends or family who could tell her otherwise. Once the inspector steps in and confirms that the gaslights really are dimming, Paula gets the reality check she needs. It shows how isolation lets an abuser control someone's mind, and how a little outside support can help a victim break free.
