Suzume Iwato is a seventeen-year-old high school student living in a quiet town in Kyushu. She meets a mysterious young man named Souta Munakata, who is searching for open doors in abandoned areas. Suzume follows him and discovers a free-standing door in the ruins. When she opens it, she accidentally releases a giant supernatural force that causes earthquakes across Japan. Souta is turned into a wooden chair by a mysterious cat spirit, leaving Suzume to take over his duties. She must travel across the country to close and lock these portals, preventing catastrophic disasters before the spirits destroy the land.
Takeaways
The giant worm that causes earthquakes breaks out of abandoned places that people have forgotten. As towns empty out and communities disappear, the memories that keep those portals shut fade away, letting disasters slip through. Closing the doors isn't just about turning a key; it requires remembering the people who used to live there and the love they shared. The cat spirit Daijin keeps pushing Suzume along her path, showing that even natural forces can guide us where we need to go. By traveling across the country, Suzume learns that healing from past trauma is the only way to lock the door on the pain of her past.
