The Parent Trap

  • Director: Nancy Meyers
  • Year: 1998

Overview

It's about identical twins Hallie and Annie who don't know the other exists until they meet at summer camp. One lives with her dad in California, and the other lives with her mom in London. They start out as enemies but quickly figure out they're sisters. They hatch a scheme to swap places so they can each meet the other parent. It isn't long before they decide to bring their parents back together. They have to deal with a gold-digging fiancΓ©e who wants their dad's money. They work together to ruin her plans and force their parents to talk again at last.

Takeaways

Hallie and Annie use their identical looks to pull off a classic switch, easily fooling their parents to experience the lives they never had. By keeping the swap a secret, they buy themselves enough time to get to know their estranged parents. When they realize their father is about to marry a greedy woman who only wants his money, the sisters team up to protect their family. Through a series of clever pranks and coordinated schemes, they drive the fiancΓ©e away and force their parents into the same room. It shows that sometimes kids can see what's best for a family far clearer than the adults can.
