Overview

During the final months of World War II, a teenage boy named Seita and his younger sister Setsuko are left homeless after their mother dies in an American firebombing raid on Kobe. They initially stay with an unsympathetic aunt, but Seita's pride and the aunt's rationing complaints drive him to move them into an abandoned hillside shelter. Seita struggles to find food and clean water, eventually resorting to stealing from farmers during air raids. Setsuko suffers from severe malnutrition and dies, and Seita dies shortly after at a train station.

Takeaways

The movie is a heartbreaking look at how war ruins everything, especially for the innocent. When the country is falling apart, the usual safety nets vanish, and everyone starts looking out only for themselves. Seita lets his pride get the better of him when he leaves his aunt's house, since moving to an abandoned shelter means they have no access to food or help. By cutting themselves off from society, he accidentally seals their fate. Even the farmers and doctors they meet are too desperate and hungry themselves to spare any charity, which shows the tragic reality of war.
