Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

  • Director: David Hand
  • Year: 1937

Overview

The story follows a young princess who runs away into a deep forest to escape her stepmother, a jealous queen. The queen wants to be the supreme beauty in the land and orders a huntsman to kill the princess. The huntsman can't go through with the deed and lets her escape. She finds shelter in a small cottage owned by seven dwarfs who work in a nearby mine. She agrees to handle their domestic work and cooking in exchange for shelter and safety. The queen eventually discovers she is still alive, uses magic to disguise herself, and tricks the princess into eating a poisoned apple before a prince rescues her.

Takeaways

The Queen is so obsessed with being the most beautiful woman in the land that she's willing to kill her own stepdaughter to stay on top. Her magic mirror just fuels her jealousy, showing how dangerous it is to rely on external validation. When she orders the huntsman to kill Snow White, her plan falls apart because the huntsman actually has a conscience. The dwarfs have a nice routine going in their cottage, but they aren't very careful about who they let inside. By leaving Snow White home alone without warning her about strangers, they make it easy for the Queen to sneak in and trick her.
