The Secret World of Arrietty

  • Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi
  • Year: 2010

Overview

Arrietty is a tiny teenager who lives with her parents under the floorboards of a suburban house. They are Borrowers, small people who survive by taking tiny amounts of household items from humans. Arrietty is discovered by a human boy named Sho who is staying at the house. They form a friendship, but the house's housekeeper, Haru, discovers the Borrowers and tries to capture them. The Borrowers must move to a new home to survive.

Takeaways

The Borrowers survive by taking only what they need, keeping their footprint as tiny as possible to avoid being seen by humans. Arrietty forming a friendship with Sho is sweet, but it also breaks their family's number-one rule: never let humans see you. Once the suspicious housekeeper Haru finds out they exist, she immediately tries to trap them, making their home too dangerous to stay in. Ultimately, the Borrowers' survival depends on their willingness to pack up and start over somewhere else, proving that being flexible and ready to move is the only way to keep their family safe.
