Overview

In nineteenth-century Germany, Ellen Hutter is a young woman who shares a deep and troubling connection with a terrifying ancient force. Her husband, Thomas Hutter, is a real estate agent who is sent to Transylvania to finalize a land sale with Count Orlok. Thomas doesn't realize that Orlok is a vampire, known as Nosferatu, who has become obsessed with Ellen. Orlok travels to Germany by ship, bringing plague and rats that devastate the town. As the plague spreads, Ellen realizes she is the only one who can stop the vampire's reign of terror, leading to a final sacrifice to destroy him.

Takeaways

Count Orlok acts like a plague, using a cargo ship to bring deadly rats and disease into the unsuspecting town. The vampire's obsession with Ellen is a dark, inescapable bond that goes way beyond normal reality. As the plague spreads, the town's doctors are completely overwhelmed, showing how fast a community can fall apart when disaster strikes. Thomas thinks of the world in terms of real estate deals, which makes him totally blind to the supernatural danger he is dealing with. In the end, Ellen beats the vampire by keeping him distracted until the sun rises, using his weakness against him. Her sacrifice saves the town, but it shows that beating a ancient evil comes at a terrible price.
