Catch Me If You Can

  • Director: Steven Spielberg
  • Year: 2002

Overview

Frank Abagnale Jr. runs away from home as a teenager after his parents divorce. He starts forging checks to survive and soon realizes he can easily impersonate pilots, doctors, and lawyers. He steals millions of dollars while staying one step ahead of FBI agent Carl Hanratty. Frank lives a lavish life, but the isolation of his deception catches up to him. Carl pursues him across the globe, eventually catching him in France. Frank is later hired by the FBI to help them catch other check fraud criminals for the government.

Takeaways

Frank takes advantage of slow banking systems and simple trust, using fake uniforms and charm to trick bank tellers and bypass security. The delay in check processing lets him live lavishly while moving from place to place. His various personas show how easily people trust authority figures, believing someone is a doctor or pilot just because they look the part. Agent Carl Hanratty is patient, slowly piecing together clues and tracking Frank across the world. In the end, the FBI realizes Frank's unique skills are too valuable to waste in prison, so they hire him to help them catch other check counterfeiters instead.
