Overview
Luca Paguro is a young sea monster who lives off the coast of the Italian town Portorosso. His parents warn him that the human world is too dangerous, but he doesn't want to spend his life herding goatfish. Luca meets Alberto Scorfano, another young sea monster who lives on land in human form. They discover that they instantly transform into humans when dry, but return to their original form when wet. The duo sneaks into Portorosso to win a local triathlon to buy a Vespa. Along the way, they make friends with a human girl named Giulia while keeping their identities a secret from the town's monster hunters.
Takeaways
Sea monsters and humans don't get along because they don't know anything about each other and are afraid. This distance makes both sides believe the worst about the other. Luca and Alberto use their ability to look human on land to enter the town. The town's triathlon gives them a chance to fit in and make a friend. Once the townspeople see who the boys really are, they realize they aren't monsters after all, which helps everyone get along and makes the community much friendlier.
