Monster House

  • Director: Gil Kenan
  • Year: 2006

Overview

Three teenagers discover that their neighbor's house is actually a living, breathing monster that eats anyone who gets too close. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny realize the adults don't believe them, leaving them to handle the threat alone. They investigate the house's history and learn it is possessed by the spirit of the old neighbor's late wife, Constance. The kids must work together to destroy the furnace, which acts as the heart of the house, before it destroys the neighborhood.

Takeaways

The kids are completely on their own because none of the adults believe their warnings. This forces them to get creative and use whatever random toys and tools they have on hand. The house itself is a living monster that attacks anyone who steps on its lawn, fueled by the angry spirit of the neighbor's late wife. The kids manage to win because they target the house's weak spot, which is the furnace. By destroying the furnace, they put an end to the nightmare, proving that a group of determined kids can beat a giant monster when they stick together.
