Barbie as Rapunzel

  • Director: Owen Hurley
  • Year: 2002

Overview

Rapunzel is kept as a servant by the witch Gothel in a hidden manor surrounded by an enchanted wall. She spends her days painting and dreams of the world outside. She finds a magic paintbrush that opens a portal to the local kingdom, where she meets Prince Stefan. Gothel discovers her secret visits and destroys her paints, locking her in a tower. Rapunzel works with her animal friends to escape and expose Gothel's lies. She unites the divided kingdoms and finds her real parents after a long search.

Takeaways

Gothel keeps Rapunzel locked away to control her and keep her from finding out where she actually came from. Finding the magic paintbrush is a total game changer, letting Rapunzel slip past the enchanted wall and meet Prince Stefan. Since Gothel's power depends on keeping Rapunzel in the dark, she does everything she can to hide the truth. The long-standing feud between the two kingdoms is just another tool for Gothel to stay in control. When Rapunzel breaks out and teams up with Stefan, they bring the kingdoms together, which completely breaks Gothel's grip on power and reunites Rapunzel with her family.
