Overview
Totsuko Higurashi is a high school student at a Christian school in Nagasaki who can see the emotional states of people as colors. She doesn't want to cause conflict, so she constantly acts to keep everyone's colors bright and peaceful. Totsuko meets Kimi Sakuragi, a beautiful girl who has dropped out of school, and Rui Kagehira, a quiet boy who secretly plays the theremin. The three form a band, finding a shared interest in music. They practice in an old church on an island, preparing for a live performance that will allow them to express their hidden feelings and define their own futures.
Takeaways
Totsuko's ability to see emotions as colors helps her keep the peace, but it also means she's always stressing about making everyone else happy. Both Kimi and Rui are struggling under the weight of expectations from their school and families, trying to figure out who they really are. When they form a band, they find a safe space where they can finally be themselves without judgment. Practicing in the quiet church gives them the time and room they need to grow and build confidence. Their first live show is how they finally share their true feelings with the people they care about, helping their families understand and accept their choices.
