Kiki's Delivery Service

  • Director: Hayao Miyazaki
  • Year: 1989

Overview

Kiki is a thirteen-year-old witch who must spend a year living independently in a new town as part of her training. She moves to a coastal city, rents a room from a baker, and starts a flying delivery service using her broomstick. She struggles with low demand, bad weather, and self-doubt, which eventually causes her to lose her flying abilities and her connection to her talking cat, Jiji. After her friend Tombo gets trapped in a runaway airship accident, Kiki regains her confidence, restores her magical powers, rescues Tombo, and establishes herself as a valuable member of the community.

Takeaways

Kiki runs a small delivery business on her broom, but it is tough to make a living in a new city. Her ability to fly is what makes her special, but she loses it when she starts doubting herself. This burnout shows that you can't just force yourself to keep going when you're emotionally exhausted. She gets her powers back by taking a break, spending time with friends, and finding her own confidence. Saving Tombo from the runaway airship proves her value to the town, helping her feel like she finally belongs.
