Overview

Taeko is a twenty-seven-year-old unmarried office worker living in Tokyo. She decides to take a vacation to the countryside to help with the safflower harvest at her sister's in-laws' farm. During her journey and stay, she experiences vivid memories of her school days in 1966. She reflects on her childhood struggles with math, family dynamics, and first crushes. As she works on the farm and talks with Toshio, a young farmer, she realizes her childhood dreams don't match her current urban life. She decides to stay in the countryside to build a life with Toshio.

Takeaways

Taeko's trip to the farm shows the contrast between the pressure of office work in Tokyo and the simple satisfaction of country life. Tokyo is stressful and demanding, leaving her feeling disconnected from what she really wants. By reflecting on her childhood memories and talking with Toshio, she starts to understand who she is and what she actually values. Deciding to leave her city job behind isn't about giving up; it's about choosing a life that makes her truly happy instead of just doing what society expects.
