Overview
Teenager Priscilla Beaulieu meets rock-and-roll superstar Elvis Presley at a party on a military base in West Germany. She doesn't expect the star to take an interest in her, but they form a close bond. Elvis eventually convinces Priscilla's parents to let her move to Graceland, his estate in Memphis. Once there, Priscilla finds her life strictly controlled by Elvis and his management team. She has to adapt to his mood swings, touring schedule, and demands for her appearance. The narrative follows Priscilla's progression from a sheltered schoolgirl to a woman who must decide whether to leave the king of rock-and-roll.
Takeaways
Graceland is basically a gilded cage where everything and everyone revolves entirely around Elvis and his career. Priscilla is kept isolated from the real world, expected to dress, act, and look exactly how Elvis wants her to. While he travels the world and does whatever he pleases, she is stuck at home waiting for his calls. Elvis uses his money and fame to keep her dependent on him, making it hard for her to have any voice. She finally finds the strength to leave when she realizes she can't keep living in his shadow. Leaving him is her way of taking charge of her own life and finding out who she is.
