Carl Fredricksen is an elderly widower who wants to fulfill a promise to his late wife by flying his house to Paradise Falls. He ties thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats away, but accidentally takes along a young wilderness explorer named Russell. They arrive in South America and meet a rare bird named Kevin and a talking dog named Dug. Carl must protect his new friends from his childhood hero, Charles Muntz, who wants to capture the bird to restore his reputation.
Takeaways
Carl's flying house is a clever way to escape his problems, but he quickly learns that he can't float away from reality forever. The helium balloons are a limited resource that slowly pop, forcing Carl to decide what items to throw out to keep his house in the air. Charles Muntz is so obsessed with capturing the rare bird to restore his reputation that he's completely lost his mind and his humanity. Carl's adventure changes from an escape into the past to a mission to protect Russell and Dug. By letting go of his beloved house to save his friends, he realizes that memories aren't stored in a building, and real happiness comes from the people you love.
